Born on May 28, 1938, in Cheylan, West Virginia, West rose to basketball stardom at West Virginia University. Drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1960, he spent his entire 14-year playing career with the team, leading them to eight NBA Finals appearances and one championship in 1972.

Known for his clutch shooting, uncanny ability to make free throws, and tenacious defense, West earned 14 All-Star selections and the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player award in 1969. His iconic silhouette, dribbling the ball up court, became the official NBA logo in 1969.

After retiring as a player in 1974, West transitioned to the front office, where he served as the Lakers' general manager for 18 years. During his tenure, he built the "Showtime" Lakers dynasty of the 1980s, led by Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
